Dapol Class 220 Virgin Voyager DCC Sound Installation
Mistakes may damage your locomotive, controller or other accessories. Use a multimeter to make absolutely sure you have completely isolated the motor from the track before testing. Always use the Programming Track for testing. Our guides are provided for reference only, and you proceed entirely at your own risk. Unsure about something - try our DCC Conversion Service instead.

In this guide you will see how to fit a sound decoder and speaker into your Dapol Class 220 motorized centre car, without having to mill out or remove any metal from the chassis. This is a non-destructive, 100% reversible conversion. The conversion uses an ESU LokSound 5 Micro Next18 sound decoder, ESU sugarcube speaker and ESU 6-pin to Next18 adapter harness.
Step 1 - Remove Body
Remove the body by gently prising the body away from the chassis.
Step 2 - Fit Decoder
Remove the 6-pin DC blanking plug. Insert the 6-pin wiring harness into the socket, and tape the ribbon cable down so that it sits flat. Glue the Next18 socket end of the adapter to the lip of the metal chassis section. Make sure the socket can't make electrical contact with the chassis with some kapton tape. Clip in your LokSound decoder.

Step 3 - Fit Speaker
Create a shelf for the speaker to sit on above the right-hand drive shaft. Here, we have used plasticard but you can also use cardboard. The shelf needs to sit high enough so that it does not foul the drive shaft.

Glue or blacktack the speaker onto the shelf, and then solder the two brown speaker wires from the harness onto it.

Step 4 - Refit Body
Clip the body back onto the chassis, and the conversion is complete.
